Potty training a child with Autism- will my child ever use the toilet?
I was there to at one point. Granted, my son was almost 4 when he was fully trained, and that may not seem that old in the ASD community. However, compared with all the kids I’ve seen grow up, it was definitely on the later side. The more important thing is we were actively trying (by actively, I mean all day, every day) for a year and a half. We tried everything and it was exhausting. I’m sure you’re here because you have experienced just how difficult it can be potty training a child with autism.
Thinking they’ll never tie shoes? Are you stuck with Velcro forever?
I know Velcro isn’t a big deal when they are little… it’s easy enough to find Velcro shoes at reasonable prices. When your kid starts to get a little older, it starts getting harder. Maybe you’ve tried teaching your kids to tie shoes before, and it has ended in screams and tears (yours and theirs). Before you give up trying, let me first share with you more about what worked for us.
