Why It’s Actually Good to Take a Therapy Break

Taking a therapy break doesn’t have to be scary

By the time I’d been a mother for four years, my two boys had received more diagnoses than I had fingers on my hands. And before I knew it, my life revolved around therapies and appointments for both boys. When I wasn’t taking the kids to an appointment, I was researching what else I could be doing to help them. Would another type of therapy or specialist be the answer?

I was struggling with anxiety and depression, but I kept on, determined to do everything in my power to help my boys.

Finding Your Tribe When You’re a Homeschool Mom

It is so easy to become isolated as a mother, let alone as a homeschool mom

We spend so much time taking care of other people, we sometimes come last (or not at all). We need connection though. We need to feel not alone. When we feel connected to other people, we are more able to bear the burdens we struggle within our lives. The key to finding this connection and relief is to find people that understand you, love you, and make you feel relaxed in their company: your tribe.  Finding your tribe, as a homeschool mom, is important.

As the parents of a child with special needs and homeschoolers, we have a couple more obstacles in our path to finding the right people to include in our circle. As a severe introvert, I especially find this difficult. I have learned a few things through trial and error and talking with people I trust, and I want to share those thoughts with you so if you are feeling alone, you can start to connect.

A million therapy tasks, with little wiggle room in your day

Is the idea of therapy daunting for you?  If you’re just starting your journey with special needs homeschooling, you may be wondering what to expect from therapy.  Here’s what it’s really like to have a kid working with a bunch of therapists.

Speech therapist: “This week I want you to work on smooth sentences using familiar books and poems he can repeat.”

Occupational therapist: “I want you to focus on proper pencil grip and calming techniques for meltdowns this week.”

Physical therapist: “He needs to work on core strength.  Keep working on his animal walks and start doing yoga.”

Me: *silently panicking* HOW ON EARTH am I supposed to fit in all this ‘homework’ for therapy and still get SCHOOL and LIFE done!?!”

Have you been there?

Are you there now?

Fear not!  Here are 5 easy ways to add therapy into your day!

Listen to audiobooks – 15 days of practical self care

Yes, listen to audiobooks…

if you don’t already, audiobooks are a great way to bask in some wisdom or inspiration.  You can learn about something that’s just for you. You don’t have to be peacefully seated, uninterrupted, or struggling to stay awake as you read in bed!

Perhaps you just need an escape from reality a bit?  A good mystery or sweet love story (any other Notebook fans with me?) can be just what you need to take your mind off of endless anxiety loops.

Adding Pedicures to Your Self-Care List

Make manicures or pedicures part of your self-care routine!

Getting out for professional Manicures or Pedicures is ahhhhmazing, but time and money…  I know that’s not always an option; it’s certainly not for me!

Consider stocking up on Epsom salts, essential oils, and anything else you may need to give yourself a manicure or pedicure at home.  Taking time to take care of yourself is important.  This is another part of the physical aspect of self-care.
